Raft of exciting new models due to hit the used market next year

Head of Valuation Services at My Car Check Trade, Gavin Amos, said: “As the market goes quiet for the festive period, it is a good time to reflect on another busy year in the LCV world and to look forward to a raft of exciting new models due to hit the used market next year.
“Volkswagen Transporter, despite the cloud hanging over the brand, continues to be THE used LCV that retail buyers want on their drive. The current model still looks modern although it is nearly five years old. Even with the T6 now available, if the prices being paid for previous model T4s are anything to go by, residual values will remain incredibly strong.
“Mercedes Benz Sprinter remains in demand all year round. If you need a bigger van with no dramas when it comes to used prices and disposability, then look no further. Ford Transit Custom, especially Trend or Limited models are a good option. Slightly less expensive than the Volkswagen Transporter, these are well built, look good and drive well. There are more of them in the used marketplace now and they generally represent great value for money.
“Values are slowing now, almost certainly due to the time of year. As for volume, most expect that this will arrive at the beginning of the New Year. As always, if stock looks too cheap then there’s probably a reason.
“In the small panel van sector there has been a bit of volume. The likes of Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta are finding homes, though the latter are thinner on the ground there’s just about enough to satisfy the marketplace. As a rule in this sector, models without a side loading door (SLD) are the ones which struggle most.
“A nice Caddy, in a good colour with some extras will still sell well. There’s also a bit of volume on Citroën Berlingo and its stablemates, which again puts values under pressure. “Mercedes Vito is as popular as ever and can sell at any age or mileage. As mentioned earlier, Volkswagen Transporter remains the dominant model in the small panel van market, but the gap between a bog standard van and a highline specification is growing.
“Short wheelbase Ford Transits continue to be popular and prices are standing firm, although base model values are under pressure. A bit like Transporter, retail buyers are looking for extras and the increasing availability of Transit Custom is meeting that need.
“Larger panel van sales are still going strong with retail businesses increasingly looking to carry as much as possible. Ford Transit long wheelbase or Jumbo, if tidy, continue to sell easily. Volkswagen Crafter is also usually a good seller, but these have to be clean and ideally with low mileage.
“The 4x4 market is on the up. It’s that time of year and the average retail buyer will have a vast selection to choose from. Mitsubishi L200 is probably still the most common, and best value for money. There are a whole range of new models arriving into this sector all fighting for a slice of the action.”
