Doing a history check before you buy a used vehicle is “very sensible”
- My Car Check data presented as evidence to Judge Rinder

“You did conduct this very sensible check. The problem is you conducted the check after things had gone wrong” - Judge Robert Rinder
My Car Check – the UK’s No.1 consumer vehicle data provider – has been praised as “a very sensible check” by ITV daytime star and criminal law barrister, Judge Robert Rinder.
The courtroom reality show Judge Rinder, broadcast on 26 October 2015, saw Eddie claiming £596 for a moped sold to him by Terrianne. He had seen it advertised on Gumtree and, after a test drive, agreed to pay £260. Terrianne was selling the bike, having owned it for just six weeks, because she had broken her leg.
Soon after buying it, Eddie became concerned that the bike was pulling to the left. He took it to a garage and was told it was “too dangerous to drive”. Making it roadworthy cost around £200, and he incurred additional costs taking public transport.
Eddie did a vehicle history check with My Car Check and discovered the moped had been written-off in 2011. He presented this data to Judge Rinder, who thanked both parties for supplying clear and helpful evidence.
Summing up, Judge Rinder said: “You did conduct this very sensible check. The problem is you conducted the check after things had gone wrong. Had you conducted it before, you never would have bought the vehicle. In this regard it is a very expensive lesson.”
Eddie’s claim was unsuccessful and he was awarded nothing.
Roger Powell, Head of CDL Vehicle Information Services (which owns My Car Check), commented: “The case of Eddie and Terrianne on Judge Rinder is a perfect example of a sadly all too common scenario. The majority of problems we see involve people buying via classified adverts, people paying with cash, and people checking with us after the event. Often the previous owner will have neglected to mention that the car was a write-off, so the current owner is unaware. Our message to used car buyers is: check before you buy.
“According to recent research by the RAC, just 10% of second hand buyers do a history check, yet 23% of checks highlight serious issues. For the price of a few litres of fuel, My Car Check can confirm whether your potential pride and joy has ever been scrapped, stolen or written-off, has any money owing on it, has had a plate or colour change and much more. We check vans and motorbikes too and also do vehicle valuations, which are a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.”
CDL Vehicle Information Services, which owns My Car Check, performs over a million look-ups a day for companies including AutoExpress, CompareTheMarket, Go-Compare, Moneysupermarket, Swiftcover, Tesco and WhatCar?.
It uses up-to-the-minute data from the police, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and all major finance houses.
To help UK consumers make the right choice, My Car Check can confirm in seconds whether your potential pride and joy has ever been scrapped, stolen or written-off, has any money owing on it, has had a plate or colour change and much more.
