MyCarCheck top tips for used car buyers March 2015: Discovery Sport, Passat & Jag XJ praised as part-exs on new 15-plate cars boost supply
MyCarCheck — the UK’s No.1 consumer vehicle data provider — has saved millions of people from making an expensive used car mistake. In these monthly bulletins its used car experts reveal significant trends in the UK market and suggest three wise buys:
- Highly desirable: Land Rover Discovery Sport
- Safe bet: VW Passat
- Used star: Jaguar XJ.
Head of Valuation Services at MyCarCheck, Gavin Amos, commented: “Our highly desirable model this month is the Land Rover Discovery Sport. A new kid on the block, the replacement for the Freelander looks certain to be a massive hit in the used market for years to come. When looking at any newish secondhand car it is always worth checking that it is free of debt, i.e. that it actually belongs to the seller and not a finance company.
“In terms of cars that hold their value, safe bets don’t come much safer than the VW Passat. There are lots of these around and they have a reputation for being a great value used buy — a good all-round family car with the cherished VW badge on the front. So long as you do a history check to ensure the one you’re looking at is what it claims to be — for instance, that it hasn’t been previously written-off — the Passat has a lot going for it.
“For our ‘used star’ this month we’ve chosen the Jaguar XJ. These suffer high depreciation in the first couple of years so, if you’re in the market for a luxury car, these can be a fantastic used buy. When it comes to negotiating, remember, as well as revealing a car’s history, MyCarCheck also provides vehicle valuations – a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.”
As to market trends, Amos commented: “In recent weeks, franchised dealers have been focused on maximising sales of new 15-plate vehicles. These new registrations will ensure a more than ample supply of part exchange vehicles for forecourts and auction halls throughout the next couple of months.
“Ex-daily rental cars are something of a worry for used car buyers at the moment. We’ve seen evidence of either a complete lack of service history or late services. In some cases it completely invalidates the warranty, which on a 12 or 18 month-old car has a massive impact on both the used value and overall saleability.”
