899 Panigale, Z1000 C2H and Continental GT praised as new sales soar
MyMotorCycleCheck.com - the UK’s No.1 motorbike and scooter provenance website - has saved many a biker from making an expensive two-wheeled mistake. In these monthly bulletins its Valuation Team’s expert reveals significant trends in the UK market and suggests three wise buys.
- Highly desirable: Ducati 899 Panigale
- Safe bet: Kawasaki ZX10R Z1000 C2H (2005-2006)
- Used star: Royal Enfield Continental GT
MyMotorCycleCheck.com’s Rob Hobson commented: “For our highly desirable model this month we’ve chosen the Ducati 899 Panigale once again. The smaller engine Panigale is a truly outstanding bike. A great number have been sold on PCP finance deals, many with aftermarket silencers, and we expect them to hold their value well going forward. So long as you carry out a history check to ensure the one you’re looking at is what it claims to be – for instance, that it isn’t still on finance – then this is certainly a bike worth paying a premium for.
“In terms of bikes that hold their value, safe bets don’t come much safer than the Kawasaki ZX10R Z1000 C2H (2005-2006). There is strength in depth in the used market for 1,000cc sports bikes, but most agree this is one of the best. Check to make sure it really is a clean standard example with below average mileage and you can’t go far wrong.”
“For our ‘used star’ this month we’ve chosen the Royal Enfield Continental GT. This light, fast bike is certainly powerful and it looks the part too. They’re only selling in relatively small numbers new, so there will always be demand for a nice used example. When it comes to negotiating, remember, as well as revealing a bike’s history, MyMotorCycleCheck.com also provides valuations – a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.”
As to market trends, Hobson commented: “Let’s start with a real positive: the 2014 new bike market was up 16.1% from 1 January to the end of April compared to the same period last year. Even the supersport and scooter sectors are showing increases, with only adventure sport and moped sales slightly down.
“Several dealers have expressed concerns about new bike availability from a couple of the Japanese suppliers. While this might not be an issue now there are concerns that it could affect sales later in the year. It comes as little surprise to see the Yamaha MT07 and the Kawasaki ZX1000 SX in the top ten model listings.
“The used market is currently more complex. Dealers say demand is good and values are holding up well, although some highlighted the problem that the growth in PCP deals has caused. Late model and certain pre-registered or demonstrator new stock is proving altogether more difficult to sell as the low deposit and monthly payment offered by a brand new bike on PCP terms is more attractive.
“We are now approaching the watershed period where people have purchased a bike for the summer months, prepared it and attended the IOM TT. This is usually followed by a lull where showrooms become a little quiet. What will the summer months bring? If we are blessed with a good prolonged period of sunny dry weather then values should remain stronger for longer.”
