MyCarCheck.com/Trade’s motorcycle expert, Rob Hobson, commented: “It seems to have come round quickly but it is March already. That means the introduction of another new registration plate. 14-plate bikes are rolling out of showrooms and it will be interesting to see how the final month end numbers look. Early reports are mixed as usual, but generally sales levels are said to be good.
“The MCN Show at London’s Excel attracted strong attendances throughout its three days – the perfect way to kickstart the season. Early sales figures for January showed an increase of more than 10 per cent for the new bike market compared with last year. Accepting that we did have snow across the country at this time last year, this must still be seen as a positive sign
“While recent weather has not been good for biking, with widespread flooding across large parts of the country, used bike sales have continued at a steady level for the past few months. As a result, many dealers are already desperate to increase their stock holdings. With the main season now approaching, trade bids have naturally increased and this has been reflected in this month’s figures. Interestingly, rather than style and model mix, condition and mileage continue to be the biggest influence, with demand strong across the whole range of bikes, scooter to superbike.
“Recent bike auctions have highlighted that traders are eagerly looking to buy, with bigger attendances and much stronger bids in evidence. It was clear that some dealers were determined to buy, which pushed hammer prices up. Traders have noted that it is starting to get that bit harder to buy privately across the country. They now have to pay slightly stronger for most things, and much stronger for the cream of the crop, something that they know will move quickly.
“Adventure style and touring may well be the driving force in the new market, but there is still strength in the sports bike market, especially the £3000-£6000 retail sector. Their relative scarcity (with significant numbers exported or crash damaged) means that proper clean bikes with FSH and average mileage are very much in demand. Sports 600s are a case in point. Demand has definitely changed from previous years, but used examples still command strong money in dealers’ showrooms.
“The first round of the new race season coincides with the start of the prime selling season. We can only see values remaining strong for the immediate future. There are signs that owners have been hanging on to their bikes that bit longer and this is reflected in higher average mileage. However, there does come a time when the need to change becomes overwhelming. This year, dealers could see the benefit as the wider economy improves.
“This might not affect the new market too much, but it could increase demand for the more expensive and newer late plate stock, and this impact will ripple down. Sunshine and dry roads are still the biggest drivers, so let’s hope for a prolonged spell of good weather over the next few months.”
