MyMotorCycleCheck.com top tips for used buyers Nov 2013:
Secondhand Ducati 1199 Panigale S ABS is worth every penny
MyMotorCycleCheck.com - the UK’s No.1 motorbike and scooter provenance website - has saved many thousands of people from making an expensive two-wheeled mistake. In these monthly bulletins its Valuation Team’s expert reveals significant trends in the UK market and suggests three wise buys.
- Highly desirable: Ducati 1199 Panigale S ABS
- Safe bet: Triumph Speed Triple 1050 (2011 model year onwards)
- Used star: Suzuki GSXR1000 K5/K6
MyMotorCycleCheck.com’s Rob Hobson, commented: “Seeing a current model Ducati 1199 Panigale S ABS on the road is a jaw-dropping sight and they sound pretty amazing too. They cost getting on for £20k new and used values hold up well against the list price simply because there aren’t too many about. So long as you carry out a history check to ensure the one you’re looking at is what it claims to be – for instance, that it hasn’t been clocked and isn’t still on finance – then this is certainly a bike worth paying a premium for.
“In terms of bikes that hold their value, safe bets don’t come much safer than the Triumph Speed Triple 1050, especially the 2011 model year onwards. This bike has progressed from smaller engines up to the 1050 and has always been a good used choice. It fits the bill for many people swapping from a sports bike. Most Triumphs are good on residual values and the Speed Triple is one of the best. It’s always worth checking to make sure it hasn’t been stolen or written off though, particularly when buying privately.
“For our ‘used star’ this month I’ve chosen the Suzuki GSXR1000 K5/K6. This bike has been available in different guises for many years but the 2005-2006 model is something of a modern classic. A lot of them have been damaged while racing but if you can find a straight one it will always be in demand. When it comes to negotiating on price, remember, as well as revealing a bike’s history, MyMotorCycleCheck.com also provides valuations – a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.”
As to market trends, Hobson commented: “The clocks have gone back and the weather is deteriorating but major new model launches make this an exciting time of year in the motorcycle industry.
“We have two big shows – EICMA Milan and UK Motorcycle Live – with major unveilings promised at both. Among the new bikes expected is a 300cc version of the CBR range. Honda has done well to carve out an increased slice of the overall market by offering bikes in new sectors. In this middleweight sector we are seeing a growing number of more exciting and affordable bikes arriving from a range of manufacturers – Japanese, European and Chinese.
“According to the latest update, eight of the top 10 individual models registered in the year are 125cc machines, the other two being BMW R1200 GS and R1200 GS Adventure.
“Overall, used values continue to hold up fairly well. The market has undoubtedly slowed and therefore there are opportunities to be had. However, in the most buoyant sector of £2,000-£5,000 used bikes, stock shortages are keeping transaction prices relatively high.”
