MyMotorCycleCheck.com reveals that bikes and scooters are far more likely to be stolen than ANY car… check before you buy!
MyMotorCycleCheck.com - the UK’s No.1 motorbike and scooter provenance website - has saved tens of thousands of people from making an expensive two-wheeled mistake. Shocking new statistics from parent company CDL Vehicle Information Services (CDL VIS) show why it is vital for bikers to check before they buy: the UK’s top 10 most stolen vehicles as a percentage of population are ALL bike and scooter manufacturers.
Lists of ‘most frequently stolen vehicles’ are usually dominated by the major carmakers, simply because there are more of these vehicles on our roads (see Table 1). However, new research for MyMotorCycleCheck.com by CDL VIS compared the number of vehicles with a ‘Stolen’ marker against them on the Police National Computer with the total UK vehicle populations for each manufacturer (see Table 2). The results make grim reading for bikers:
Table 1: UK’s Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles by Manufacturer
# Manufacturer 1 Ford 2 Vauxhall 3 Honda 4 BMW 5 Volkswagen 6 Mercedes 7 Yamaha 8 Peugeot 9 Audi 10 Piaggio
Table 1: UK’s Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles as a % of Manufacturer Population
# Manufacturer 1 Lexmoto 2 Gilera 3 Piaggio 4 Kymco 5 Sym 6 Ktm 7 Aprilia 8 Yamaha 9 Kawasaki 10 Suzuki
To underline the point, the next three on the list in the second table – Honda, BMW and Mercedes – make both cars and bikes. The first non-bike manufacturer on the list is van-maker LDV at 14th, followed by Audi at 15th.
Justin Powell, Consumer Business Manager at MyMotorCycleCheck.com, commented: “Our business is all about providing as much information as possible about the vehicles on our roads to help second-hand buyers make the right choices.
“To support the launch of our newly revamped MyMotorCycleCheck.com website, in October we asked our in-house vehicle data division, CDL VIS, to list the most frequently stolen bikes. While running their analysis they discovered the incredible fact that, taking into account the vehicle populations, the vast majority of motorbikes and scooters are far more likely to be stolen than ANY car.
“When you think about it, this is actually not so surprising. For most thieves it is easier to pick up a bike and shove it in the back of a van than it is to steal a modern car. For second-hand bike and scooter buyers it is a compelling reason to spend just a few pounds with someone like MyMotorCycleCheck.com before parting with any cash.”
