2010 MERCEDES C220 Cdi SPORT BLUE EFFICIENCY MANUAL SALOON
First impressions of the C220 CDI SPORT, well, it's a superb looking, well-proportioned car especially in Sport Guise (£31375 including extras as tested). The build quality is easily on a par with BMW and Audi using high quality materials throughout.
Internally the C Class is very spacious, 4 or 5 adults can travel in comfort even on a long journey and the driving position is hugely adjustable meaning that anybody can find an ideal driving position.
This car was equipped with the excellent Command Satellite Navigation System (optional) which along with some radio functions is operated by a very straight forward control on the centre console. The combined Satellite Navigation/radio screen hides away when it isn't in use or the ignition is turned off.
BMW have had Efficient Dynamics for some time and this is the Mercedes Blue Efficiency competition. Using this technology Mercedes have managed to reduce the emissions on this particular variant to just 127g/km.
I set about my first drive in the C Class with an open mind. On the move the car is quiet, even with the low profile tyres on this Sport model. The engine lacks the common Diesel Knock that can be heard even from many modern engines. It also offers a very wide power band with more than enough torque. However, the most rewarding side of this engine was the combined mpg figure achieved of 47.7 mpg on a journey with a lot of stop/start and town journeys involved and more importantly no motorway! That's against an official figure of 45.6mpg (urban). Superb.
The only problem initially was the foot operated handbrake, even in conjunction with the hill hold assist that is on the car, hill starts can be awkward. This isn't a problem with an optional automatic gearbox but is brought to light with this manual. However, within a few hours it became a little easier to cope with.
Dynamically the car is class leading, a superb rear wheel drive chassis with positive steering makes for a fun drive on even the most challenging roads. Mercedes have really got it right with this car. It does everything that you ask of it and more. C Class is more than a match for the Audi and BMW competition.
