The level of parking fines imposed on motorists across the UK has risen almost four times the rate of inflation.
Last year local authorities collected more than £173m in Penalty Charge Notices – a 7.7% increase on the previous year, amounting to more than £12.5m.
Since local authorities in England and Wales took over parking enforcement from the police, motorists have found themselves being increasingly punished for the shortage of parking spaces in many towns and cities.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, which surveyed all 174 local authorities in England and Wales, it is estimated that councils collected almost £300m in parking fines.
