Guide To Car Data Checks

The Industry

The car data vehicle check industry for the consumer has only been around for a relatively short time, circa 1980, although the first checks date back to the 1940's for the motor trade only.

There is not a motor dealer within mainland GB that would purchase a car or any vehicle for that matter without first performing a car or vehicle data check, if you consider that the main problems of false id, theft, previous accident damage, outstanding finance or HP (a massive problem for the motor trade as they are not protected as the general public by the "innocent purchaser" defence, and a dealer will lose the car or have to pay the outstanding amount to the finance company where a private buyer, buying in good faith, has protection from the finance companies.

Buying a car privately

Please make sure that if you are buying a vehicle privately then you go to the sellers house, make sure they live there, very often it may be rented for a few days, this has happened before and when you return the house is all closed up and the neighbours do not know where they went to, make sure the reg doc has their name and address on, never ever buy if they have no documents, never mind how cheap it is, you could even be charged with receiving stolen goods when the vehicle's true identity is revealed.
